Year of the Horse: Move, Breathe, Reset

Self-care rituals for energy, confidence and calm ~ the Face Matters way.

The Year of the Horse is often associated with momentum: a fresh surge of energy, a desire for freedom, and a feeling of “right, let’s do this.” It’s the kind of year that can make you want to say yes to more, move quicker, take chances, and finally prioritise the things you’ve been putting off.

But here’s the thing: real momentum isn’t created by rushing. It’s created by rhythm.

And that’s where self-care rituals come in ~ not as another thing to do, but as the steady practice that keeps you feeling well, grounded and glowing while life speeds up around you.

At Face Matters, we believe rituals are the most powerful form of self-care. A few minutes. A few beautiful botanicals. A moment to come back to yourself.

The Horse energy: confident, bright, always moving

Horse energy is bold and spirited. It’s independent, warm, and naturally magnetic ~ but it can also be a little “go-go-go.” When you’re living at pace, your nervous system feels it first… and your face shows it second.

You might notice:

Tension gathering in the jaw, brows or temples

Tightness across the forehead

Puffiness from stress, poor sleep or dehydration

Redness or sensitivity when you’ve been running on empty

A dullness that isn’t about skincare ~ it’s about overwhelm

This is why the Year of the Horse is a perfect invitation to return to a simple truth: your skin thrives when you do.

Ritual over routine: the Face Matters approach

A routine can feel like a checklist. A ritual feels like care.

A Face Matters ritual is:

simple (because complicated is rarely sustainable)

sensory (texture, scent, warmth and touch calm the mind)

effective (supporting the skin barrier, glow and resilience)

grounding (a nervous-system reset disguised as skincare)

The Horse doesn’t need a hundred steps ~ it needs a steady track. So if your year is about movement, let your self-care be your anchor.

Your Year of the Horse Self-Care Rituals

1) The “Start Strong” Morning Glow (3 minutes)

Best for: busy mornings, low energy, puffy eyes, dull skin

Splash with warm water or gently cleanse if needed

Apply your Face Matters serum or moisturiser (whatever suits your skin that day)

Do 30 seconds of light upward strokes from collarbone to jaw, then cheekbones to temples

Finish with a few presses around the brow and under-eye (gentle, like smoothing silk)

Why it works:
You’re waking up circulation and supporting lymph flow ~ but you’re also telling your body: I’m safe. I’m here. Let’s begin.

2) The “Unwind the Jaw” Evening Reset (5 minutes)

Best for: tension, stress, clenching, headaches, tightness around mouth

Warm a small amount of balm or moisturiser between your hands

Place your fingertips at the hinge of your jaw (just in front of the ears)

Massage in slow circles for 30–60 seconds

Sweep down the side of the neck to the collarbone (gentle drainage)

Add a few presses across the temples and between the brows

Why it works:
Jaw tension is one of the most common places we store stress ~ and it can quietly impact everything from sleep to facial tightness. This ritual softens the face and calms the mind.

3) The “Horse Heart” Breath Ritual (1 minute)

Best for: overwhelm, racing thoughts, skin flare-ups triggered by stress

Try this before skincare, before a meeting, or anytime you feel rushed:

Inhale through the nose for a slow count of 4

Exhale through the nose for a slow count of 6

Repeat 5 times

Then place your hands on your cheeks and simply hold for a moment.

Why it works:
Longer exhales help your body shift out of stress mode. And when your nervous system settles, your skin often follows.

4) The Weekly “Bright & Clear” Reset (10 minutes)

Best for: congestion, uneven texture, tired-looking skin, hormone swings

Once or twice a week:

Cleanse

Apply your clay mask (or your preferred treatment step)

While it’s on, lie down and place one hand on your belly, one on your heart

Let your face rest. No scrolling. No multitasking.

Rinse and finish with your moisturiser

Why it works:
It’s not only about detoxing the skin ~ it’s about giving your whole system a pause. The glow you want often starts with rest.

That’s not indulgence. That’s health.

A note from us: women helping women

At Face Matters, self-care isn’t just personal ~ it’s purposeful. We’re proud to donate a portion of sales to Refuge, supporting women and children escaping domestic abuse. Because feeling safe, supported and cared for should never be a luxury.

So when you choose Face Matters, you’re not just choosing a skincare ritual ~ you’re part of a bigger one: women helping women return to themselves.

Your Year of the Horse intention

If you set one intention this year, let it be this:

Move through life with momentum ~ but come back to yourself with ritual.

Your face reflects your life.
